Yarn U app

Disclaimer: I was supplied this app for free to review.

This week I’ve been having a look at the Yarn U app for iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad.
Basically it is a source of information on yarn. The database has been growing with each update and contains over 100 yarns and links to free patterns. (you will need internet access for this feature).

Yarns can be searched by weight, brand, hand dyed, hand wash, machine wash, those with links to free patterns, etc.

Once you select a yarn you are given a picture of the yarn with some basic information. The page also includes the brand, weight, gauge, fibre content & yardage. There are pros & cons listed (such as felts well, splitty, contains knots etc) and links to free patterns (if available) and a website selling the yarn. There is the ability to share this information by emailing to a friend, add a comment to the page or to favourite the page.

As well as browsing the yarns you can also look at all the comments together or access photos. As a visual person I loved the photo option. Either scroll through page after page of luscious photos of yarn and knitted & crocheted items or narrow your options by filtering using the same options as you did for the yarns. Once you see a photo you like you can click on it & it takes you to a larger image with information such as the yarn used, the pattern and website.

Yes this information is available in other places, but what makes this app worth having is that someone else has gone to the trouble of getting it together, the database is not huge but it is quite large & is growing with each update, it is so portable & convenient and the images are beautiful (have a look at some screenshots here). I will certainly be keeping this app & making use of it.
