Sweet!

A yarn range I am proud to be able to stock in my little store is Be Sweet yarns.

As well as offering yarns that are beautiful and interesting, I also think it’s important to “give back” in some way where we can & to offer a helping hand to those less fortunate. Be Sweet does just this.

Here’s a little info on the company & their philosophy:

Be Sweet Overview

Beauty, Creativity, Resourcefulness

Be Sweet, a company with a conscience, was founded on the principle of being kind to others. Nadine Curtis created Be Sweet in 2003 while living in Cape Town, South Africa. Be Sweet’s mission; to bring socially and environmentally friendly products to fashionable consumers, products that evoke an individual style and help support community development around the world.

Be Sweet works with several job creation programs in developing countries who give artisans the confidence and the means to support themselves and their families in an
otherwise economically depressed region. The programs in South Africa have grown to include over 200 villagers, mostly female members of the Xhosa Tribe who live in the

Western and Eastern Cape regions. Program participants are responsible for making yarns, accessories and more.  With the help of experienced program directors,
the women are able to work in stable environments where they can learn a new skill, earn a fair and sustainable wage, and enjoy their jobs.

Most of the women depend on the work for their survival.

Be Sweet began with Curtis wholesaling a handful of handmade items from South Africa to boutiques in the United States.

Be Sweet’s specialty yarns and wearable accessories can now be found in over 300 stores and boutiques in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan.

Be Sweet donates a portion of its profits to a non-profit educational support program in Cape Town called Bright Start and the Shaw Park School, a primary and secondary school in the Eastern Cape where many of the participants’ children attend.

New developments for the Be Sweet team in 2012 include developing a new basics range called Simply Sweet and redeveloping the company’s brand marketing materials
 both on and offline.

Be Sweet proudly supports direct trade and fair trade ethics.
